Check Mate for Newbery 2013!

This past Monday at 8:00am PCT,  the Academy Awards for books, better known as the 2013 Youth Media Awards occurred in Seattle, WA.  Every year it’s held on or close to the last day of the American Library Association’s Midwinter Conference.  This year was no different from any of the past.  The entire auditorium held their breath as award after award was announced with the Newbery being the last.  The Newbery is last because it is the oldest and most pretigious book award for children.  This year our library not only already had the Newbery Award winner, we also had each and every Newbery Honor books! Check and Mate!

2013 NEWBERY WINNER

Katherine Applegate’s amusing fantasy about a gorilla in a mall circus who re-examines his life after becoming friends with a baby elephant was inspired by a newspaper article that the author read 20 years ago.  the article was about the real Ivan, a gorilla that had been cruelly put on exhibit in a Tacoma, Washington shopping mall until a public outcry led to him being removed to better quarters in the Atlanta, Georgia zoo. 

  

 2013 NEWBERY HONOR

Laura Amy Schlitz, the librarian for Baltimore’s the Park School is the author of Splendors and Glooms, a tale about a wicked puppeteer and a powerful witch. The story is based on a dream that Mrs. Schlitz had at the age of 4 where she woke up crying to her parents because she thought she saw a witch crying outside her window and 50 years later a story was born!

The end result is a mystery that reaches back into the Colonel and Miss Lana’s past and involves the entire community, including Mo’s best friend, Dale; his dreamy brother, Lavender; and the Uptown Garden Club.
