NNPS Inquiry Process

Newport News Public Schools incorporates Information Literacy into their college, career and citizen ready skills.  By the time of students’ graduation, they are expected go out into the world able to use an inquiry process that makes it possible for them to accurately locate, evaluate and use sources to develope questions, explore a topic, synthesize and share their final products, and provide the appropriate citations and/or credit

The NNPS Inquiry Process Model encourages students to use these skills. It combines ideas from several research models studied by NNPS librarians including Jamie McKenzie’s Resarch Cycle and Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz’s Big6 Research Model.

This process provides students with a circle of steps that assist them in finding, evaluating, assimilating and ethically using new information.
Inquiry is not a one-way linear series of steps. The process flows and connects so that students revisit elements as needed to arrive at understanding.
